March 26, 2014

Dear Friend of Desert Samaritans;

It is with regret we must inform you that Desert Samaritans for Seniors will be closing permanently.

Desert Samaritans for Senior’s (DSFS) has provided services for the less fortunate of the Coachella Valley for over 20 years assisting low income individuals over the age of 60. DSFS assisted individuals with direct rent and utility support, shopping, grocery deliveries, transportation for medical appointments, purchase of prescriptions, counseling/crisis management and offered a wealth of resource information and referral services. Proudly, DSFS has provided these services to help over three thousand seniors in our community each year.

Over the past several years, the Board of Directors has taken several steps to stabilize the organization financially to maintain its services for low income seniors throughout the Coachella Valley.

Action taken in the fiscal years of 2011, 2012 and 2013 had the following results:

· The net operating loss for DSFS has decreased every year, by 31% or more than $71,000 in three years.

· Income from galas and special events increased each year and in 2013 was 50% more than 2011.

· General contributions and donations have also increased by 108% between the years 2011-2013.

· Grant funding increased, with new grants from foundations that had never funded in previous years or, hadn’t provided funding for several years.

Unfortunately, two realities have become apparent. First, overhead costs have not been funded adequately. Second, donor support for seniors does not seem to be a high priority for the philanthropic community.

In response to these issues the budget was reduced for three and a half years and a campaign was undertaken in hopes of attracting new donors. In the current financial climate, we are unable to continue providing services and therefore must close effective March 31, 2014.

The Board wishes to thank those who have generously supported the organization with gifts, large and small. For many years Desert Samaritans for Seniors provided services to seniors who urgently needed assistance and, who through no fault of their own, found themselves in in difficulties at a critical stage in life. It is the Board’s hope that another charity might come forward to fill this gap in critically needed support for the elderly of the Coachella Valley.

Sincerely,

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
